Every State of the Union address experiences lengthy interruptions for applause, which is watched closely. Are only Republicans cheering? What about the Democrats? Did Chuck Schumer just roll his eyes?
But for at least one moment on Tuesday night, everyone in the chamber — and a good number of people on Twitter — bonded over the introduction of Hope Holets and her family.
Hope was adopted by Albuquerque police officer Ryan Holets and his wife Rebecca. The Holets are in their 20s and already have four children, but Ryan came across a homeless pregnant woman about to inject herself with heroin. He managed to dissuade her.
I’m speechless. Ryan and Rebecca Holets, along with Baby Hope (who is in a deep sleep) get a standing ovation at the #SOTU speech. https://t.co/Ccn9ig0VZ3 pic.twitter.com/GwY1uE8coz

That adoption story is incredibly powerful. It illuminates the desperation felt by many held captive by drug addiction–and the power of hope and love.

That story about Ryan and Rebecca is wonderful. God bless them. Good reminder that America is full of generous souls and full hearts.
