There Was at Least One Moment of Genuine Unanimous Clapping at the SOTU

Every State of the Union address experiences lengthy interruptions for applause, which is watched closely. Are only Republicans cheering? What about the Democrats? Did Chuck Schumer just roll his eyes?

But for at least one moment on Tuesday night, everyone in the chamber — and a good number of people on Twitter — bonded over the introduction of Hope Holets and her family.

Hope was adopted by Albuquerque police officer Ryan Holets and his wife Rebecca. The Holets are in their 20s and already have four children, but Ryan came across a homeless pregnant woman about to inject herself with heroin. He managed to dissuade her.

She told him she did not know where to turn, but badly wanted a safe home for her baby. In that moment, Ryan said he felt God speak to him: “You will do it — because you can.” He took out a picture of his wife and their four kids. Then, he went home to tell his wife Rebecca. In an instant, she agreed to adopt. The Holets named their new daughter Hope.
