Sen. Marco Rubio said Thursday night that without his father’s money, Donald Trump would be another nobody in New York.
“Here’s a guy who inherited $200 million,” Rubio railed. “If he hadn’t inherited $200 million, you know where Donald Trump would be right now? Selling watches in Manhattan.”
Various estimates say Trump inherited anywhere from $40 million to $200 million from his father, which he used to launch his real estate empire.
Rubio’s dig came after the two sparred over trade. After Trump threatened a trade war, Rubio said that makes no sense given that Trump makes many of his ties and shirts in Mexico and China. Rubio also slammed Trump for his checkered past on Trump University and sending four companies into bankruptcies.
When Trump told Rubio that he doesn’t know anything about business, Rubio fired back that he doesn’t “know anything about bankrupting four companies.”
After nearly 30 seconds of cross-talk between the two, Trump lashed out at Rubio for allegedly buying a house for $179k and flipping it to a lobbyist for $380k before passing a law in their favor. However, Rubio hit back, telling him he would be a nobody if he hadn’t inherited a fortune from his father.
