Kerry, Saudis team up to back ISIS foes

Secretary of State John Kerry and Saudi King Salman pledged additional support to Syrians fighting the Islamic State.

“The secretary thanked the king for Saudi Arabia’s support to multilateral efforts to pursue a political transition in Syria,” State Department spokesman John Kirby said. “They pledged to continue and intensify support to the moderate Syrian opposition while the political track is being pursued.”

Kerry met with a host of Saudi officials in Riyadh Sunday, and dined with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef and Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir, among others, Saturday night, the Wall Street Journal and Reuters report.

There was no further elaboration on the U.S.-Saudi plan to arm fighters in Syria.

This has been an issue for some time, with critics frequently questioning the true political motives and affiliations of forces opposing ISIS or Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Recently, Syria’s deputy prime minister appeared to criticize the U.S.’s relationship with Saudi Arabia during his address to the United Nations.
