Moyer is chief people person (aka head of human resources) at SnagAJob, the largest jobs site for finding employment for hourly workers. The Henrico, Va.-based business was recently named “The Best Small Company to Work for In America” by Great Place to Work, the firm that produces the “FORTUNE 100 Best Companies to Work For” list. Your business helps people find work and was just named the best small business to work for. That must be especially significant.
Our mission statement is to put people into positions so they can maximize their potential and live more fulfilling lives. We tend to live that motto inside the business. Because we’re projecting the capabilities of the company helping employers create better workplaces, the fact that we are a great place to work gives us more credibility.
What separates SnagAJob from other employers?
Leadership is the key to everything you do in an organization. We want leaders who are authentic in the way they deal with people and we invest a good bit in the training of leaders. We also want leaders who engage and empower people, to take initiative and risks to do things the way they think best.
Google is famous for the fun atmosphere it creates at the workplace. Does SnagAJob have anything like that?
There’s always somebody playing pingpong in the office. There’s a Wii. We have a whole week for office Olympics and each day at lunch time there’s a different event like chair soccer or curling. And every month we do something fun that brings people together. We make sure the ways we select people and train people and reward people are geared toward making sure people perform in a manner consistent with what’s needed to grow this company. We have great fun and great camaraderie, but it’s all designed to achieve the results needed to appease our investors.
