Metal detectors installed outside Orlando’s three major theme parks

How uneasy is the nation about terrorism and gun violence?

All three major theme parks in Orlando, Fla. — Walt Disney World, SeaWorld and Universal Studios — installed metal detectors at their front entrances Thursday.

Walt Disney World would not say how long its metal detectors would be in place, while SeaWorld said its installation is part of enhanced security during the holiday season. Universal Studios said it was testing the metal detectors.

“We continually review our comprehensive approach to security and are implementing additional security measures, as appropriate,” Disney said in a statement.

In an email, SeaWorld said it would be “enhancing security measures for the busy holiday season, including increased security presence both inside and outside the parks.”

According to Universal spokesman Tom Schroder, the decision to test metal detectors was not due to a specific threat, but rather because they “want our guests to feel safe when they come here. We’ve long used metal detection for special events, such as Halloween Horror Nights. This test is a natural progression for us as we study best practices for security in today’s world.”

Toy guns are also now no longer sold at Disney World. In addition, people 14-years-old and older are no longer allowed to wear costumes, even at Halloween parties.

More deputies and security guards have already been strolling around the parks, as have specially trained dogs patrolling key areas.
