Steve Bannon: ‘The anti-establishment thing is kind of a luxury we can’t afford right now’

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon is walking back his original anti-establishment stance in order to help ensure Republicans keep their majorities in the House and Senate, regardless of whether he sees eye-to-eye with the more moderate side of the party.

“People are starting to realize that the anti-establishment thing is kind of a luxury we can’t afford right now,” Bannon told the New York Times.

Bannon once vowed to run out every establishment Republican and overthrow the Washington status quo, but his new position shows he’s more interested in keeping the GOP in power. Six months ago, he endorsed primary candidates challenging incumbent Republicans and pledged to oust Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., from office.

Bannon, who was once the president’s go-to adviser, was pushed out of Trump’s orbit earlier this year after he attacked his own colleagues in Michael Wolff’s book, Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House.
