Senate Democrats will question Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice today on whether the United States’ war on terrorism will include a war against Iran.
Virginia Democrat Jim Webb is outraged that the State Department hasn’t answered his questions on the Bush administration’s plans for Iran, his spokeswoman, Jessica Smith, told The Examiner Wednesday.
Iran continues to flout international pressure to scrap its nuclear program, which the Bush administration and other world leaders fear is part of a nuclear weapons program. Bush also blames the theocracy in Tehren for sectarian violence in Iraq.
The Bush administration has adopted a new tack against Iranian operatives in Iraq, promising to kill or capture any Iranians who are helping Shiite death squads in Iraq.
At aSenate Committee on Foreign Relations meeting last month, Webb asked Rice whether the Bush administration was considering a war against Iran. She promised to reply in writing.
Smith said that a letter from one of Rice’s staff arrived last week.
“It was insufficient,” Smith said.
Webb ran as an anti-war Democrat and has called for phasing out the U.S. presence in Iraq quickly. His son is a Marine fighting in Iraq.
The senator is worried that the administration will not only escalate the war in Iraq, but carry it to neighboring Iran, Smith said Wednesday. Rice is scheduled to testify before the foreign relations committee this morning.
