Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl is expected to be charged with desertion for abandoning his post in 2009.
Bergdahl was captured in June of 2009 after leaving his remote outpost in Afghanistan, and then held by the extremist Haqqani Network in Pakistan.
After being held captive by enemy forces for five years, Bergdahl was freed last year in a controversial prisoner swap. Under the terms of the deal, he was traded for five senior Taliban leaders who had been held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The Taliban leaders were transferred to the custody of Qatar.
Army officials are denying the report, saying no decision has been made.
Army Gen. Mark Milley, the head of Army Forces Command, “is reviewing now the Army’s facts and findings to determine impartially any appropriate next steps and possible actions,” Army spokesman Wayne Hall told the Washington Examiner.
Sources told NBC News the charges are expected to be filed within the week and exceed absent without leave because he left the post “in the middle of a combat zone, potentially putting the lives of his fellows soldiers at risk.”
