Sorry, Morton’s. Tough luck, Bobby Van’s. On Wednesday some prominent Washingtonians are giving up their power lunches and, instead, handing over their lunch money to the community.
Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, political analyst Charlie Cook, journalist Cokie Roberts and husband Steve Roberts are among those who are participating in “Skip Lunch Feed a Bunch,” a charity nonevent sponsored by the Capital Area Food Bank.
“I think it’s so critical that we understand that there are so many people just outside our doorsteps that are less fortunate than we are that don’t have the same access to good food and good nutrition that we do,” Daschle told Yeas & Nays. “And I think something like this gives us an opportunity on days other than the holidays, which oftentimes we think of the less fortunate, [to] do something about it.”
So what kind of lunch will Daschle be giving up? He’s a big fan of the downtown Italian spot Tosca.
“I generally love their pasta and I love their fish,” he said, adding that he is a relatively light eater. He wouldn’t say how much money he planned to donate, but he wants to continue to help the Capital Area Food Bank after skipping lunch.
“I don’t consider it to be a one-time contribution, but I’d like to make it consequential,” he said.
He also admitted this: “I haven’t talked to my wife about it yet.” Oops.
