The GOP says Democrats are willing to shut down the government in order to get their way on spending for federal agencies, while holding up money for soldiers.
Rep. Ryan Zinke, R-Mont., gave a hefty rebuke of the president and the minority party in Saturday’s Republican response to President Obama’s weekly radio address.
Zinke, who served as a Navy Seal, said Obama is threatening to veto a new spending bill that would help American troops get the support they need while in harms way.
“You’re probably wondering ‘why would the president threaten to veto a bill supporting our troops?’ Well it actually has nothing to do with national security,” Zinke explained. “You see, the president and his party want more money for big government agencies like the IRS and the [Environmental Protection Agency]. And in order to get it, they plan to hold our troops hostage.”
Zinke went on to explain that the Democrats are even willing to shut down the government in order to get their spending increases for these big agencies.
“Not only are Democrats set in blocking a pay raise for our troops, but if they don’t get more money for the IRS and EPA, they intend to shut down the entire federal government,” Zinke said.
“Taking care of our troops should be our top priority, but it isn’t on the Democrats’ to-do list right now,” Zinke said. “They’ve lost sight of American values in favor of Washington politics. To think President Obama still has no strategy to defeat and destroy [the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria], yet his party has a strategy to get more money for the IRS.”
