Michigan governor trolls Clinton, Sanders debate

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder defended himself against attacks from Democratic presidential candidates during Sunday night’s debate in Flint.

The governor took to Twitter to respond to claims from Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders that he should resign in the wake of the city emergency, vowing he was working to make it right.

In the Vermont senator’s opening remarks at the debate, Sanders reiterated his calls for Snyder’s resignation over the contaminated water risis.

“I believe the governor of this state should understand that his dereliction of duty was irresponsible. He should resign,” Sanders said.

Clinton concurred, saying, “I agree. The governor should resign or be recalled.”

Snyder responded in a tweet, saying he was taking responsibility for switching the city’s water source to the Flint River, whose excessively polluted water corroded lead pipes and contamined the public source.

He also defended his five years in office, toting “an increase of 440,000 new private sector jobs in the Great Lake State since Jan. 2011.”

Clinton called for federal and state officials to propose emergency bills that would fix the problem.

“I know the state of Michigan has a rainy day fund for emergencies. What is more important than the health and well-being of the people, particularly children? It is raining lead in Flint and the state is derelict in not coming forward with the money that is required,” Clinton said.

Snyder tweeted that the state legislature has proposed $300 million in funding for the city.

Clinton then mentioned the development of a program by Flint Mayor Karen Weaver, Flint Water Works, to pay people to deliver water while the pipes are being fixed.

The governor responded on Twitter, writing that he, too, has partnered with Flint Water to hire 81 residents for the project.
