At least four Russian missiles headed for Syria accidentally crashed in Iran on Thursday, according to a U.S. official.
The cruise missiles were launched from a Russian ship in the Caspian Sea to targets in Syria and crashed as they flew over Iran. It’s unclear if there are any injuries or casualties as a result of the incidents. The U.S. official said it’s not known where the missiles hit, but said they were a part of the 26-missile salvo from Wednesday.
The incident comes hours after Defense Secretary Ash Carter warned that Russia’s actions are becoming “increasingly unprofessional.”

“They’ve shot cruise missiles from a ship in the Caspian Sea without warning. They’ve come within just a few miles of one of our unmanned aerial vehicles. They have initiated a joint ground offensive with the Syrian regime, shattering the facade that they’re there to fight ISIL,” Carter said during a speech during a NATO ministerial meeting in Brussels. “This will have consequences for Russia itself.”
