Newsweek retracts post making light of assault on white supremacist

Newsweek magazine on Tuesday retracted and apologized for an online post that made light of the recent physical assault on Richard Spencer, a white supremacist.

The now-deleted post featured a video clip from Friday, during President Trump’s inauguration in Washington, in which Spencer is sucker-punched in the face in the middle of an interview. The video went viral online, and some people edited it to add a music track.

Newsweek’s post included the edited videos with music and was headlined, “The Infinite Joy of Watching a Nazi Get Punched to Music.”

In messages on Twitter, Newsweek said the article, previously on its website, had been removed.

“Newsweek has retracted a story about a meme related to the assault of Richard Spencer, published on Jan. 24,” the magazine said Tuesday. “The story did not meet the ethics and standards of Newsweek. We regret its publication.”
