Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee mocked Chicago protesters who succeeded in canceling Donald Trump’s Friday night rally in Chicago.
“Congratulations, Chicago protesters, for fighting ‘fascism’ by threatening mob violence to shut down free speech,” Huckabee said Saturday morning.
Hundreds of protesters attended the Friday night event and waited for Trump to take the stage. A crowd local reports put in the thousands also gathered outside the arena in Chicago. Trump postponed the rally, citing security concerns, in reaction.
“It’s a little bit sad when you can’t have a rally in a major city in this country,” Trump said on MSNBC Friday night. “What ever happened to freedom of speech?”
Huckabee, a Republican, has made multiple presidental bids, has not endorsed any of the remaining candidates, but has often come to Trump’s defense.
Huckabee defended the businessman-turned-candidate in late February for failing to disavow the Ku Klux Klan.
“David Duke and the Ku Klux Klan are absolutely abominable. I don’t know anybody that I know, anybody that I’ve ever known, supports them,” Huckabee said. “Does anybody think Donald Trump is a racist? I don’t,” Huckabee told MSNBC last month.
Huckabee’s daughter, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, joined Trump’s campaign as as senior adviser after Huckabee ended his candidacy on Feb. 1.
