Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., called for confronting North Korea Saturday.
“North Korea’s forgotten maniac, Kim Jong Un, has been met with indifference, rather than resolve,” Gardner said in this week’s Republican Party address. “It’s time to reverse this administration’s failed policy of strategic patience.”
Gardner continued to fault the president.
“North Korea has conducted four nuclear tests, three of which occurred in the Obama administration,” Gardner said. “We know that the regime is expanding its nuclear stockpile, and its capabilities are growing.”
“North Korea may already possess as many as 20 nuclear warheads, with the potential to gain as many as 100, within the next five years,” Gardner continued.
Gardner specifically lauded U.S. allies Japan and South Korea on this issue.
Gardner did not speak on China, a nominal North Korean ally with a robust economic relationship with the United States. China is thought to be pivotal in convincing the North Korean government to moderate, or in negotiating any solution to this situation.
