Speakeasy: Ailes on TV talent

“I think we do better television than the other guys, and no matter how we do it, they don’t seem to catch up. We seem to out-invent them and think ahead of them, and have better story ideas, better graphics, better on-air talent. We just are better television producers.”

Fox News chief Roger Ailes, talking to AP about about his success in the ratings game and his approach to TV journalism, which he admitted to linking with looks. He said he likes CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, but “he’s not a star,” and he spends too much time with his back to the camera. “I hired Sarah Palin because she was hot and got ratings,” he declared — but he talked of himself with far less flattery, saying he “just went to my doctor and he said, ‘Other than arthritis, your chart reads like a 40-year-old’s. You’re old, you’re fat and you’re ugly, but you’re not going to die from any of those things immediately.'”
