It’s rare to see a large-scale development complete construction on time, much less ahead of schedule. But real estate tycoon Donald Trump is bucking the trend.
The Trump Organization announced Monday that its first hotel in Washington, D.C. would open to the public this September, more than two years before its original scheduled completion date of late 2018.
Construction on the 19th century Old Post Office Pavilion at 1100 Pennsylvania Ave. NW commenced 18 months ago in June 2014. The $200 million renovation will yield 263 hotel rooms and suites, including the “Trump Townhouse,” a 6,300-square-foot suite that comes with a private street entrance.
The Trump International Hotel may also be where the GOP front-runner calls home if he receives the party’s nomination and goes on to win the election in November. Although it is standard for a president to reside in the White House, that not a requirement of office.
Wealthy New York pols have a history of turning dow official residences. America’s 21st president Chester Arthur refused to move into the White House until it was renovated. More recently, former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg chose to forgo living in Gracie Mansion during his three terms.
The hotel will also feature a 13,200-square-foot Presidential Ballroom. It will rank as one of the largest ballrooms in Washington, ideal for a celebratory ball in November should the Manhattan billionaire trump his competition.
