Fenty office blames missed deadline on typo

Mayor Adrian Fenty might have missed his own deadline to submit a report analyzing two quasi-public agencies that some D.C. Council members hope to dissolve, according to a published account of his 100-day plan.

In an aggressive 100-day action plan published January 11, Fenty named analyzing the structure of the Anacostia Waterfront Corporation and the National Capital Revitalization Corporation as a 60-day action item. Both agencies have endured criticism for being too slow to enact the economic development improvements.

But, Fenty spokeswoman Mafara Hobson defended the office Thursday, saying the 60-day deadline was a “typo” and that the initiative was initially meant as a 100-day action item.

“The study is not complete, therefore there is no report,” Hobson said. “The 100-day plan (the published document) is in error.”

The D.C. government Web site listed the item with a 60-day deadline late Thursday morning. By 2 p.m. the site reflected Hobson’s comments.

Hobson would not say who worked on the report or whether a consultant prepared it internally.

Council Member Jack Evans, D-Ward 2 has targeted the AWC and NCRC. He proposed legislation dissolving both agencies in January. Council Member Kwame Brown, D-At large, has planned hearings on the legislation later this month.

Evans said he had not spoken with the mayor’s office about the report and was not aware of its deadline.

The mayor’s office confirmed Thursday that it had reached two additional 60-day deadlines dealing with jobs and economic development. Hobson said the office will release a Comprehensive Workforce Strategy in coming weeks to help connect residents with local jobs. The D.C. Chamber of Commerce, Brookings Institution and the University of the District of Columbia contributed. Fenty is also in the process of confirming 25 local corporate executives to name to an advisory team to help recruit new business to the District, Hobson said. She said the names would be released in about two weeks.
