Less than half of Americans say Obama loves America

Roughly half of Americans question President Obama’s love for America.

Though 47 percent of respondents to a new Huffington Post/YouGov poll said Obama loves the country, the rest say he does not or that they’re not sure.

As expected, there is a split down party lines over Obama’s supposed love of country. Only 11 percent of Republicans say he loves America, compared to 85 percent of Democrats. Independents are split — 42 percent say Obama loves the U.S., while 38 percent disagree and 20 percent are unsure.

Interestingly enough, those questioned under age 30 were found to be less likely to say that they love America compared to their elders. Only 71 percent of those under 30 said they they love America, compared to 93 percent of over-65s. Fifteen percent of under-30s said they do not love America, with 14 percent saying they aren’t sure.

The questioning comes a week after Rudy Giuliani, former New York City mayor, questioned whether Obama “loves America” during a private dinner for potential GOP presidential candidate Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker. Giuliani, who has refused to walk back his remarks in their entirety, penned an oped in The Wall Street Journal Sunday saying he “didn’t intend to question President’ Obama’s motives or the content of his heart.”

The online poll of 1,000 American adults was conducted Feb. 20-23 with a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points.
