If it’s April Fools’ Day, some politician somewhere is making a joke.
On Wednesday, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker got in on the fun by teasing a “big announcement” in a tweet.
Walker’s tweet alluded to his status as a likely Republican candidate for president, who will likely make his bid official in the coming months. A wave of campaign announcements has just begun: Sen. Ted Cruz announced his candidacy last week, and Sens. Rand Paul and Marco Rubio plan to make their bids official this month.
But Walker didn’t announce a bid for president Wednesday. Instead, he trumpeted his support for the University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team, which will play the Kentucky Wildcats Saturday night in the Final Four of the NCAA tournament.
“America needs big, bold leadership & that’s why I’m supporting Coach (Bo) Ryan & the (Wisconsin Badgers) Saturday,” Walker tweeted.
Nevertheless, it wasn’t all fun and games: Walker also used the joke as a ploy to get supporters — and reporters — to hand over their emails to his political committee and donate money to his campaign-in-waiting.
