New ad hits Mark Pryor’s unclear views on gay marriage

A new ad highlights Sen. Mark Pryor saying “I gotta run” when asked whether he supports same-sex marriage.

The National Organization for Marriage’s Victory Fund is running the ad to highlight the Arkansas Democrat’s unclear statements about same-sex marriage. In May, an Arkansas judge overturned a 2004 ballot measure and declared allow same-sex couples could begin marrying within the week.

At the time, Pryor said he’d voted for the measure back in 2004, but in the ad, he is shown avoiding the question.

“Uh, I need to run in. We’ll give it some time, we’ll see what happens … I gotta run!” the ad highlights him saying in a parking lot — clipped from a longer video obtained and released by America Rising, the GOP opposition research super PAC, in May.

The two-term Democrat is in danger of losing his seat to Republican challenger Rep. Tom Cotton. The race is deemed one of the most important in the midterm elections this year.

“Tom Cotton will fight to restore our vote for marriage,” the 30-second ad concludes.

The ad, which began airing Wednesday, is running across Arkansas on news shows such as Fox News and CNN until Sunday.

The buy is part of a $200,000 ad buy for Arkansas and North Carolina, and may be extended past Sunday if funds permit, said Frank Schubert, NOM’s political director.

A RealClearPolitics average of polls shows Cotton leading Pryor by 7 points with less than a week until Election Day.
