Newly minted Donald Trump surrogate Chris Christie didn’t waste time hitting the campaign trail for Donald Trump, faulting opponent Marco Rubio Saturday for “melting” during a debate and his Senate record.
“The president of the U.S. is not a no-show job so you are not qualified,” the New Jersey governor said of Rubio during an Arkansas rally on Saturday.
Christie said Rubio touts his foreign policy experience because of his work on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, but missed 60 percent of the hearings. He dinged Rubio for missing a majority of the meetings on the Small Business Committee.
Christie added that Rubio “melted” during the debate, a reference to the Florida senator’s profuse sweating.
Trump then took the stage and didn’t let up.
“I have never seen any human being sweat like this guy,” Trump said.
“This guy has a fresh mouth,” Trump said. “He is a very nasty guy. I thought that Ted Cruz was a liar, but Rubio is worse,” he said.
Christie shocked the political world when he endorsed Trump on Friday, becoming the first sitting governor to endorse the real estate mogul.
A New York Times article Satruday suggested the endorsement came partly out of pique. Rubio called Christie after the governor bowed out in a bid to seek his support, the article said, but Rubio’s statement that Christie had a bright future in politics struck the governor as patronizing and offensive.
Trump is currently first in the Washington Examiner‘s presidential power rankings. Rubio is third.
