Kasich: Return abortion regulation to states

Republican presidential candidate John Kasich said Sunday that his answer to the abortion issue is to let states determine what’s legal and what isn’t, rather than the federal government.

“I hope Roe v. Wade will be repealed and it will be returned to the states,” he said.

The abortion issue came to the forefront of the GOP race for president this week after front-runner Donald Trump said that if abortion were banned, women who receive them should be subject to some form of punishment. Trump later walked back that statement, and continued walking it back on Sunday.

Asked if he believed a woman should be accountable for receiving would-be illegal abortions, Kasich said no, “because I think it’s difficult on the woman to begin with … and that’s the end of it.”

He also said that any punishment for illegal abortions should be determined at the state level.
