An intruder was quickly taken into custody after jumping the White House fence late Sunday night.
At about 10:25 p.m. EST, the intruder climbed the White House complex’s south-side fence, the Secret Service said. The uniformed division of the Secret Service immediately took the intruder into custody, spokesman Brian Leary said.
The intruder — whose gender, name and age was not released — was carrying a package that was examined and found not to be harmful, Leary said early Monday morning.
The fence on the south side is similar to the one on the north side facing Pennsylvania Avenue, which was climbed by a man last year who eventually ran across the lawn and entered the White House.
Since then, the White House security has been of concern, as plans to raise the now-eight-foot fence have been in the works.
It is unknown why the fence was scaled Sunday night.
