CBS analyst: Brokered GOP convention ‘would be so much fun’

Veteran newsman Bob Schieffer, former anchor of CBS’s “Face the Nation,” said Thursday that reporters are actively hoping for a brokered Republican convention because it “would be so much fun.”

On CBS’s “This Morning,” Schieffer, who is now a political analyst for the network, said Democrats and Republicans have moved further to their extremes and that it could open up the possibility for an independent party. He said, though, that dissatisfaction within the GOP might mean a convention in the summer wherein the party has no clear nominee.

“We reporters have to be careful because we want so much for there to be a brokered convention for the first time in our lifetimes because it would be so much fun,” he said. “I think especially on the Republican side we may well go into that convention not knowing who their candidate is.”

The idea of a brokered GOP convention, which would take place if no single candidate has secured enough delegates to be the clear nominee, has titillated the national media for several weeks now. Many have said a brokered convention would be a big sign of disarray with in the Republican Party, though the odds of one taking place are highly unlikely.
