Newt Gingrich rips ‘disgusting’ media treatment of Melania Trump

CELVELAND — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich accused the media of applying a double standard with the accusations of plagiarism in Melania Trump’s covention speech.

“It is the most disgusting example of the news media’s desperation to smear somebody who had a home run, bases loaded, amazing speech,” Gingrich told the Washington Examiner.

Gingrich argued similar charges brought against Democratic politicians have not received similar treatment, saying the media wasn’t “upset” when it was reported that President Obama lifted lines from then-Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick.

Going on to call the attacks against Melania Trump “made up” and “disgustingly stupid,” Gingrich said it’s the media’s attempt to keep attention away from what he viewed as an effective and intelligent speech.

“The media is so terrified,” added Gingrich. “If you compare Bill Clinton next week and Melania Trump this week, you tell me which first spouse you’d rather have.”
