Two U.S. service members were killed early Wednesday morning in Afghanistan by attackers in Afghan military uniforms, the Pentagon announced.
Capt. Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, said the service members were supporting Operation Resolute Support when the attackers, wearing Afghan National Defense and Security Force uniforms, opened fire on their vehicle.
“We are deeply saddened by the reports out of Afghanistan overnight,” Davis said.
The shooting occurred at an Afghan National Defense and Security Force compound in Helmand province, Davis said. Coalition service members returned fire and killed the gunmen, according to a Pentagon release.
The Pentagon is not releasing their names or branches yet pending notification of next of kin.
