Senate passes temporary transportation bill

Senators passed a two-month transportation spending patch Saturday that will keep construction sites operational until July.

The extension resulted from a dispute over whether to fund a six-year, $478 billion transportation bill or simply to fund transit projects until the end of the year, Reuters reported.

The Highway Trust Fund, which draws its funding from a federal gas tax, was set to dry up May 31.

Transportation funding has suffered in recent years as cars have become more fuel efficient and drive fewer miles on roads.

What’s more, the fuel tax has remained fixed since 1993 despite the rising costs of construction due to inflation.

President Obama has pushed for the six-year spending plan.

The White House proposed funding infrastructure projects by requiring large corporations to “repatriate” overseas investments to the U.S. so they can be taxed at a higher rate.
