Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump would not say no to an independent run when pressed on the issue during an interview on ABC’s “This Week” Sunday morning.
Host George Stephanopoulos asked Trump if he would consider a third-party campaign if the Republican establishment were to unite against him.
“Well, we’ll see what happens,” Trump answered, before saying that he “leads every poll by a lot” and that he resonated with people who show up to his campaign events by the tens of thousands.
Stephanopoulos then asked again, “But you’re open to an independent run?”
“Well, I’m going to have to see what happens,” Trump said. “I will see what happens. I have to be treated fairly. You know, when I did this, I said I have to be treated fairly. If I’m treated fairly, I’m fine. All I want to do is a level playing field.”
In September, Trump pledged his support for whoever becomes the Republican presidential nominee. By signing the formal pledge, he also committed to not running a third-party or independent campaign.
