Mayor Michael Bloomberg asked city hospitals to lock up baby formula to encourage new moms to breastfeed their infants. Hospitals were asked to track their formula use and report their findings to city health officials. The “Latch On NYC” campaign is intended to emphasize the health benefits of breastfeeding. Nearly 99 percent of the city’s moms breastfeed newborns, but that drops off to 31 percent after two months.
