Two of three captured fighter jets reportedly being flown by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria have been destroyed by the Syrian air force, according to that country’s information minister.
The Associated Press quoted Omran al-Zoubi as telling Syrian TV late Tuesday that the two jets were destroyed by bombs as they were landing at the al-Jarrah airbase east of Aleppo, one of several Syrian military bases captured by the Islamist extremist group. That’s where former Iraqi air force pilots reportedly were training members of the extremist group to use the jets.
Al-Zoubi said the extremists were able to hide the third jet.
The Syrian government’s claim could not be independently confirmed, and U.S. officials have said they have no information about the Islamic State flying captured fighter jets.
