Donald Trump argued Monday that saying President George W. Bush kept the country safe after 9/11 is like saying a baseball team played well later in the game after getting beat up for 19 runs in the first inning.
Jeb Bush has defended his brother’s tenure in office by saying, “he kept us safe” after 9/11, but Trump said that defense seems to be aimed at downplaying Bush’s failure to prevent 9/11.
“I’ve heard for years, he kept the country safe after 9/11,” Trump said. “What does that mean, ‘after’? What about during 9/11? I was there. I lost a lot of friends that were killed in that building.”
“The worst attack ever in this country? It was during his presidency,” Trump said. “I mean, we had the worst attack ever. By the way, after that, we did OK.”
“The team scored 19 runs in the first inning, then we played well,” he added. “I don’t think so.”
