Cruz predicts ‘Mondale-level bloodbath’ if Trump nominee

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz decried Donald Trump’s “gutter politics” on the campaign trail in the billionaire’s hometown of New York City.

Trump previously threatened to “spill the beans” about Cruz’s wife on Twitter, in response to an ad featuring an image of Trump’s third wife made by an anti-Trump super PAC unaffiliated with the Cruz campaign.

On Wednesday, the Texas senator argued that Trump’s attempts to intimidate his spouse may have been prompted by the former reality television star’s desire to change the topic of conversation from foreign policy in the aftermath of the Brussels terrorist attacks.

“On foreign policy, Donald Trump doesn’t have a whole lot of knowledge, a whole lot of understanding of our enemy, so he wanted to change it to a topic that he does understand, which is personal attacks and sullying and attacking others,” Cruz told reporters. “Well the American people recognize this is a dangerous time and we need a serious leader.”

During Cruz’s speech in New York, the senator pointed to Trump’s recent remarks to a pro-Israel group in Washington, D.C., as evidence that Trump is “a man who reads a speech from a TelePrompTer and does not know that the name of Israel is not Palestine.”

The senator also told reporters the Republican Party will witness a “Mondale-level bloodbath” on Election Day in November if Trump becomes the GOP nominee.

Cruz will depart New York and head to Wisconsin for an event on Wednesday evening.
