The House is expected to pass legislation as early as next week that would increase sanctions on North Korea in the wake of its latest nuclear test.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., told reporters that Democrats plan to support a GOP bill increasing North Korean sanctions.
“It’s ready to go and we support it,” Pelosi told reporters Thursday. House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., confirmed minutes later in a separate briefing that a vote was coming by next week.
While the bill has not been officially added to the schedule, the office of Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., also hinted a vote was possible.
Pelosi said it would be taken up under special rules that limit debate and amendments and require the backing of two-thirds of all members to pass it. Those “suspension” bills are usually reserved for non-controversial measures that are expected to pass.
“That will have strong bipartisan support,” Pelosi said.
