WOULD OBAMA OR ROMNEY CREATE MORE JOBS?
Half of America’s voters don’t think either would do much. President Obama and Mitt Romney staked their campaigns on promises to create jobs, but an Associated Press/GfK poll shows 55 percent of voters say neither would be able to do much about unemployment. However, Republicans are more likely to believe the election will make a difference, the poll shows.
WHAT IS SEVERABILITY?
If the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday strikes down the individual mandate in President Obama’s health care law, it will also have to decide whether the provision can be “severed” from the rest of the law, thus salvaging other parts of the legislation such as subsidies for individuals to purchase insurance. If the court rules the mandate is too interconnected with other provisions, the entire law could be struck down.
IS GREECE’S NEW GOVERNMENT ALREADY IN TROUBLE?
Less than a week after taking control of the debt-ravaged country, Greece’s new government had to deal with the sudden, health-related resignation of its designated finance minister, Vassilis Rapanos. That followed a postponed meeting of the country’s international debt panel. And Germany, a central player in Europe’s raging debt crisis, warned that this week’s European Union summit would not likely yield major decisions on Greece.
IS THE PROPOSED PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY CASINO DEAD?
Plans for a National Harbor casino were in jeopardy last week when Maryland House members rejected the idea. But Gov. Martin O’Malley can still bring lawmakers back to Annapolis for another go at winning approval for the casino in July. Hopeful casino supporters launched television and radio ads in Annapolis and Baltimore encouraging lawmakers to revive the casino.
