President Bush said Wednesday he will not become “pundit in chief” by offering a running commentary on the race to succeed him in 2008.
“I’d just like to establish some ground rules here with those of you who are stuck following me for the next little less than two years,” Bush told members of the White House press corps at a news conference. “I will resist all temptation to become the pundit in chief, and commenting upon every twist and turn of the presidential campaign.
“As much as I like politics — and I’m intrigued by the race,” he added, “I won’t comment.”
Bush even dodged a fanciful hypothetical question about whether he could win a third term.
“I’m not running,” he deadpanned. “I know that’s going to disappoint some of you.”
