Fact Check: Did South Korea’s President Suggest Donald Trump Be Given the Nobel Peace Prize?

Facebook users were skeptical of a story claiming that the President of South Korea suggested Donald Trump be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in North Korea.

“President Trump should win the Nobel Peace Prize,” President Moon Jae-in told his aides on Monday. The Mercury News re-published an article from the Washington Post with the news, prompting Facebook users to mark the article as possible malarkey.

“If anyone were to win the Nobel Peace Prize for the current effort to solve the North Korean nuclear problem,” the Post reported, “it should be President Trump. That’s what South Korea’s president said Monday when it was suggested that he himself should be in line for the award.”

These reports are accurate. So accurate, in fact, they prompted shouts of “Nobel!” from the crowd during a Trump rally in Michigan this weekend.

Just as President Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples” perhaps Trump’s prize isn’t so far-fetched.
