Ben Carson has largely avoided speaking ill of rival Republican presidential candidates, but his supporters have picked a fight with Donald Trump.
Black America’s Political Action Committee, a pro-Carson super PAC run by Alvin Williams, is soliciting donations to keep a radio ad knocking Trump on the air through the South Carolina primary. The BAMPAC ad begins with a clip of Trump saying “our leaders are stupid.”
“What does all this [sic] shouting and insults have to do with solving America’s problems?” a narrator asks.
“You don’t have to be the loudest to be the most effective,” says a second narrator in a louder voice. “Dr. Ben Carson’s record speaks for itself: a committed Christian and experienced leader. Strong and steady Ben Carson can get our country back on track.”
BAMPAC’s isn’t the only Carson group to take shots at Trump. Following last week’s presidential debate, John Philip Sousa IV, chairman of the pro-Carson 2016 Committee, released a statement attacking Trump.
“If America wants another eight years of a paralyzed Washington D.C., then Trump and Cruz are your candidates,” Sousa said. “Neither has the skill set necessary to bring Congress and the American people together to protect America and to realistically solve our problems.”
But BAMPAC’s fundraising solicitation to keep its ad on the air differs in that it portrays Carson’s presidential bid as suffering on its last legs.
“Dr. Carson has been falling in the polls, but he’s still within striking distance in South Carolina — a MUST WIN primary state,” Williams wrote. “If Carson fails to win in South Carolina, then his campaign for president could die beneath the palmetto trees!”
The Carson supporters’ emphasis on South Carolina, whose primary happens on Feb. 20, over Iowa, whose caucus takes place on Feb. 1, may show that his most ardent fans have written off a strong showing in the Hawkeye State. Carson ranks ninth in the Washington Examiner‘s GOP presidential power rankings.
