Democrats call on NY’s Grimm to resign

Democrats are increasingly calling on Rep. Michael Grimm to resign in light of reports that he will plead guilty to a federal tax evasion charge.

Grimm, a New York Republican, handily won re-election to Congress in November, even after being indicted earlier this year on 20 counts of fraud.

With Grimm expected to plead guilty to one count Tuesday, House Republican leaders, including Speaker John Boehner, have not asked Grimm to step down.

Democrats, however, are demanding Grimm give up his seat in Congress.

“Now that the election is over, Rep. Grimm is finally admitting the truth to his constituents,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Tuesday. “Clearly, Speaker Boehner must insist that Congressman Grimm resign immediately.”

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee also has set its sights on Grimm’s seat, which might be competitive in a special election.

“It’s past time for Michael Grimm to go and it’s John Boehner’s responsibility to make it happen,” said DCCC spokesman Josh Schwerin.
