Rep. Tulsi Gabbard said Sunday that she will step down from her post as vice chair of Democratic National Committee to support Sen. Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign.
Gabbard, a Hawaii Democrat, announced her endorsement of the Vermont senator in an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday morning.
She said she trusts Sanders to consider the consequences of any military action, an apparent shot at front-runner Hillary Clinton’s support for the 2003 invasion of Iraq and support for other military interventions while secretary of state.
“It’s most important for us, as we look at our choices as to who our next commander in chief will be, is to recognize the necessity to have a commander in chief who has foresight, who exercises good judgment,” Gabbard said.
Gabbard last fall faulted the DNC for airing too few Democratic debates. The DNC’s debate scheduling was widely seen as an effort to deny Sanders airtime to contest Hillary Clinton’s road to the Democratic nomination. Gabbard said she was disinvited from the first Democratic debate due to her criticism.
