The National Jewish Democratic Council sharply criticized columnist Ann Coulter for tweets she made during the Wednesday Republican presidential debate, hitting the candidates for repeatedly expressing support for Israel and opposition to President Obama’s Iran deal.
“How many f—ing Jews do these people think there are in the United States?” she tweeted. She followed that with, “Maybe it is to suck up to the evangelicals.”
NJDC chair Greg Rosenbaum offered to help her with her math Thursday. “Ms. Coulter, since you asked so nicely, there are approximately 6.5 million Jews living in the United States. Furthermore, the vast majority of that population voted for President Obama in 2012, and we will continue to vote for Democratic candidates in 2016 and beyond.”
Rosenbaum used the opportunity to slam Republican presidential candidates as well, arguing that their policies “harm Israel” because they did not back the president on his nuclear agreement with Iran. Fans say the deal will help avert conflict. Critics claim the deal has too many loopholes and Iran has a poor record of compliance.
“Perhaps, Ann, you did not get the memo from GOP headquarters that Israel is supposed to be a partisan wedge issue, designed to peel off Jewish voters from the Democratic Party. After all, putting partisan politics over good policy, your party’s legislators unanimously opposed the world’s agreement with Iran to prevent it from acquiring a nuclear weapon,” he said.
Coulter refused to apologize or retract the tweet, telling Fox News Thursday that it was an appropriate criticism because it was “pandering, pandering, pandering.
Polls have shown Jews sharply divided on the wisdom the Iran deal. A poll released Friday by the American Jewish Committee showed 50.6 percent approved of the president’s deal, and 47.2 percent disagreed with it.
