Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced increased security in Arab areas on Israel after a shooting Friday in Tel Aviv left two dead and seven injured.
“We will increase dramatically the law enforcement services in the Arab sector,” Netanyahu tweeted Saturday afternoon. He added that Israel will enforce the law in all parts of the country.
The announcement comes as a large-scale manhunt is underway to look for the gunman, who is still on the loose. Police said the suspect is an Arab from Wadi Ara, an area in northern Israel with a large Arab population, Israeli media reported.
Visiting the scene of the attack, Netanyahu called for “loyalty to the state’s laws from everyone,” the BBC reported. Security forces remain on high alert.
A man who claims to be the suspect’s father called the police after seeing footage of the attack. The alleged shooter is reportedly a 29-year-old who was sentenced to five years in jail in 2006 for attempting to grab a soldier’s gun.
