Paper: Clinton emails show ‘bad judgment bordering on recklessness’

The editorial board at USA Today is slamming Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton for her controversial email practices while serving as secretary of state, and said it reveals a reckless attitude and raises real questions about her commitment to a transparent government.

An editorial published Sunday night admitted that Clinton may not have done anything illegal by using a private email server to conduct both personal and government business, which may have included sensitive matters of national security. Regardless, however, that move showed poor judgment.

“[T]he episode raises serious questions about the Democratic front-runner’s decision-making and commitment to openness in government,” USA Today said. “One of the many reasons that it was a bad idea to mix personal and business messages is well known to anyone with an email account: As hard as you might try, you can’t control what comes into your inbox. And if you’re the secretary of state, that’s inevitably going to include some sensitive information.”

Clinton’s campaign has been mired in the controversy since the story broke in March. She has maintained that she did not transmit any classified or top secret government information over the server. The server has, however, been erased and Clinton herself selected which ones would be turned over to the government for review.

“[C]ontrary to the Clinton camp’s assertion that the controversy is a lot of ‘nonsense,’ federal computer security is no joke,” said USA Today. “Regardless of whether Clinton broke any laws, her decisions about the server represented bad judgment bordering on recklessness.”
