Dems set to spend record amounts in Florida governor’s race

The Democratic Governors Association is on track to spend a record amount to defeat Republican Gov. Rick Scott in Florida, one of the most hard-fought gubernatorial races this year.

The group gave Democratic candidate Charlie Crist $1.5 million Monday, bringing its total investment to about $5.6 million, according to the Miami Herald.

That puts it close to the previous record of $6 million, which the DGA spent in 2010 trying to boost Democrat Alex Sink, who lost to Scott. With seven weeks until Election Day, that means it will likely be the most expensive campaign in the DGA’s history.

Still, Republicans are outspending Democrats in the race. The Republican Governor’s Association, the DGA’s counterpart, has given $11.2 million to Scott so far.

A RealClearPolitics average of polls has Scott ahead of Crist by just 1.2 points.
