Gay marriage back on in Nevada

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy has allowed for same-sex marriage to take place in Nevada, revising an earlier order that temporarily banned the practice in the state.

Kennedy initially Wednesday morning issued a surprise emergency stay putting same-sex marriages on hold in Idaho and Nevada. Hours later he clarified his order to exclude Nevada from the stay.

Kennedy gave no explanation for the change, but it likely was because only Idaho asked for the stay.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco declared gay marriage legal in Idaho and Nevada on Tuesday, a day after the Supreme Court decided not to take up appeals from five states seeking to prohibit gay and lesbian unions. Monday’s order effectively made gay marriage legal in 30 states.
