Justices meet to decide on case load

The Supreme Court will spend Monday making its schedule for the year.

Though the court does not officially return until Oct. 6, the nine justices will have to decide which appeals to consider out of the more than 1,000 that have piled up during summer recess, according to the New York Times.

Only the justices are allowed inside during the top-secret time. Justice Elena Kagan, the most junior member of the court, is the only one allowed to answer the door if someone knocks.

The future of same-sex marriage in the United States is expected to be a top priority for the court.

Earlier this month, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg suggested the fate of same-sex marriage bans could be decided in the Cincinnati based 5h U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

If the appeals panel falls in line with other rulings around the country, then there would be “no need for us to rush,” she said. If not, then the Supreme Court would be more likely to take up the case.
