DURHAM, N.H. — Democratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz dismissed a Des Moines Register editorial Thursday calling for a “complete audit” of the results from the Iowa Democratic caucuses Monday night.
“The Iowa Democratic Party managed over 1,800 precincts at events at the same time the other night and did so well and effectively,” she told the Washington Examiner shortly after the fifth Democratic debate Thursday.
“This was the closest race in the Democratic caucus in history [and] I am proud of the work they did,” she said.
“I don’t agree with the Des Moines Register,” Wasserman Schultz added. “I think the Iowa Democratic party is being fair to both sides.”
The Register’s editorial Thursday morning came after Hillary Clinton carried an extremely narrow victory over Sanders in the Iowa caucuses, leading him by just two-tenths of a percentage point.
“The results were too close not to do a complete audit of results,” wrote the Register’s editorial board. “Two-tenths of 1 percent separated Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton. A caucus should not be confused with an election, but it’s worth noting that much larger margins trigger automatic recounts in other states.”
