Donald Trump endorsed Mitt Romney for president in 2012, but now, he says Romney was always a “dope” from the start.
“It’s my honor — real honor, and privilege to endorse Mitt Romney … Mitt is tough. He’s smart. He’s sharp. He’s not going to allow bad things to continue to happen to this country that we all love,” Trump said just four years ago while offering up his support for the former Massachusetts governor.
But on Thursday, after Romney said Trump’s tax returns should be examined, Trump had a harsher assessment.
“Mitt Romney, who was one of the dumbest and worst candidates in the history of Republican politics, is now pushing me on tax returns. Dope!” the current Republican presidential front-runner tweeted Thursday morning.

Trump’s latest attack comes in response to Romney’s claim that perhaps the real estate mogul is reluctant to release his tax returns because they contain “a bombshell.”
“Frankly, I think we have good reason to believe that there’s a bombshell in Donald Trump’s taxes,” Romney, who previously faced criticism for refusing to release his own tax documents prior to 2011, told Fox News on Wednesday. “I think there’s something there. Either he’s not anywhere near as wealthy as he says he is or he hasn’t been paying the kind of taxes we expect him to pay, or perhaps he hasn’t been giving money to the vets or to the disabled like he’s been telling us he’s doing.”
After previously stating that his campaign was “working” on putting together his tax documents, Trump told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Wednesday that he would “make a determination” as to whether or not he plans to release his taxes.
