House Budget panel passes $3.8 trillion Republican budget

The House Budget Committee passed a $3.8 trillion Republican spending plan.

After defense hawks and fiscal conservatives struggled to see eye to eye late Wednesday night, the committee passed Chairman Tom Price’s first budget, 22-13, on a party-line vote.

However, before the budget heads to the House floor next week, changes in the form of $20 billion in defense spending may take place in the House Rules Committee.

“Completing work on the budget is always one of the toughest jobs we have all year,” Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, told reporters on Thursday, according to The Hill. “There is overwhelming support in our conference for providing additional resources to protect our national security. In consultation with Chairman Price, next week the House will consider a rules that reflects those priorities.”

The House is struggling to finish up its budget business before it adjourns next week.

According to Rep. Rob Wittman, R-Va., the final budget is likely to have $96 billion in extra defense spending.
