Secret Service to test drones in DC

The U.S. Secret Service announced Wednesday it will be conducting exercises using drones in restricted Washington D.C. airspace in the coming days and weeks.

According to a statement, the “unmanned aircraft systems exercises” will be “carefully planned and tightly controlled,” and will be conducted with other government agencies.

The Secret Service hasn’t disclosed the purpose for the exercises or which agencies will be involved.

In January, a quadcopter drone landed on the White House lawn, raising security concerns.

A federal government employee later admitted he had been piloting the drone for recreational purposes, but it called into question the ability of the Secret Service to protect the White House from an attack that utilizes a drone.
